It’s Thrifty Green Thursday over at The Green Baby Guide. Go on over and check out lots of Eco-friendly tips!
The kids start school in a few weeks and I am very nervous that I am going to have a repeat of last year’s cold virus season. Megan & Will went through a never ending cycle of getting sick, to getting better, to going back to being sick.
Realistically, I know the kids are going to eventually come down with a cold at some point this Fall & Winter, but, as their mother, I can at the very least, try and make sure that I take every necessary prevention to help in keeping those nasty cold germs at bay.
Below, I have listed 8 natural tips to help with preventing a common cold. Will & Ethan have both been diagnosed with Asthma, and Eczema, so I try as often as I can to use natural products on their skin and natural cleaning products in our home.
8 Natural Tips To Prevent The Common Cold
Wash you hands thoroughly. This is probably the most single important step that you can take. You can find out how and when to wash your hands by reading my post: Hand Washing 101.
Use Hand Sanitizer. If washing your hands is not an option, using a hand sanitizer can be a very effective way to get rid of germs. Due to its high concentration of alcohol, a sanitizer can kill germs after being rubbed into your hands for at least 30 seconds. Keep sanitizers handy in your purse, backpack, work desk, diaper bag, car and in every room of your house. Remember, it’s the next best thing to soap and water.
Eat and drink healthy. Eating a well-balanced diet is key to keeping your body healthy. Foods rich in Vitamins A, B C & E naturally boost your immunity against disease and illness. Make sure to drink plenty of water. Water flushes out the bad toxins that are lurking in your body. Try to avoid drinking soda which can rob your body of essential nutrients and instead, try drinking some juice fortified with vitamins or an herbal green tea loaded with antioxidants.
Use Vitamins and Herbal Supplements. Using supplements will help when you are not eating right or you have a picky eater in the house. Please check with your doctor before giving children herbal or vitamin supplements and always double check the vitamin dosage. A Website like eVitamins, has many forms of supplements and vitamins available for you to choose from.
Disinfect your home. You can easily clean your home with vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and tea tree oil. They all have natural disinfecting properties that help kill germs. Make sure to wipe down all surfaces, like door knobs, computer keyboards and toys. Or, if you are unsure about homemade cleaning products, there are plenty of green cleaning products available at places like SHOP.COM. When your kids come home from school, have them remove their shoes and school clothes. Place the school clothes in the hamper to be washed. This will cut down on the number of germs coming into your home.
Fresh air. Getting fresh air for just 20 minutes, even in the cold weather, boosts your energy levels and leads to a better night’s sleep. Being out in nature can reduce depression, helps with creativity and promotes healing in your body.
Get enough sleep. Adults need about 8 hours of sleep, toddlers about 13 hours. Being sleep deprived has a negative effect on your body’s ability to reduce illness, so make sure to get the daily recommended hours of sleep, even if it means sneaking in a nap somewhere.
Exercise. Exercising can help reduce stress. When your body is under stress, your immunity is compromised and that can lead to colds and other illnesses attacking your body. A simple brisk walk can do wonders, or, if the weather is not cooperating, have a dance party inside with your kids.
The above tips are really just natural common sense, don’t cost that much in terms of time or money and will hopefully lead to a virtually cold free season!

Great tips! My cousin has eczema and started drinking one cup of oolong tea a day. She says that this was the first thing that cleared it up. If she stops drinking her cup a day for even a week, the eczema returns. I don’t know if this would work for your sons, but I thought it was interesting!
Thanks for joining us over on Thrifty Green Thursday!

I use baking soda and vinegar to clean as much as I can in my house. How to you use Teatree oil as a cleaner? I know how it’s used as a health and beauty aid but not as a household cleaner.

You can mix the Tea tree oil in with water to prevent mold and to get rid of musty smells. I updated the article with links to pages on how to use vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and tea tree oil. Hope that helps!
